Who Is Nawazuddin Siddiqui?

Nawazuddin Siddiqui was born on 19 May 1974 in Uttar Pradesh. With 7 brothers and 2 sisters in the house, he is born in a Muslim Zamindar family. After finishing his schooling at B.S.S Inter College Budhana (Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh), he entered college life. Nawazuddin Siddiqui graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar, (Uttarakhand). Being an average student, Nawazuddin was just a movie watcher without any passion. He worked as a chemist in Vadodara. 

Thereafter, he moved to Delhi in search of a new job. After which his passion for cinema caught fire from within and inspired him to enroll in the National School of Drama. He was previously rejected for not meeting the entry criteria of having experience acting in plays or short videos. Thereafter, Siddiqui worked with his friends in about ten to twelve stage plays (one in Dehradun) to meet the admission requirements of the institute.

Nawazuddin Siddique As A Junior Artist In Jungle

After graduating from the National School of Drama, he made his Bollywood debut with a film titled Sarfarosh, starring Aamir Khan in the lead role and Sonali Bendre in the lead. Although the film won several awards, including the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Healthy Cinema, there was no recognition as it was a very minor role in the entire film.

After which he appeared as a restaurant waiter in Ram Gopal Varma’s school and remained unrecognized as before. He again starred in Ram Gopal Varma’s next film Jungle, which had the same identity. He played a small role in Rajkumar Hirani’s debut project Munna Bhai MBBS. Nawazuddin was partially fed up with rejection and no identity, due to which he was shifted to Mumbai where he worked in TV serials and still did not succeed. He worked on a short film titled Bypass starring opposite Irrfan Khan.

The period 2002-2005 made him jobless and caused financial issues, due to which he had to live in a flat shared by four others. Notably, in 2004, Siddiqui faced several problems in terms of finances, including not paying him the rent of his house and causing him further depression. He then stayed with his senior in his apartment, where he agreed to cook for him.

From the year 2004-2007, he did a few minor roles in movies including Black Friday. In 2009, he appeared in a cameo role in the film Dev D.

Rise to Stardom

His role as a journalist in the 2010 film Peepli Live gave him the much-needed recognition he deserved and was waiting for. Then came Patang: Patang (2012) which was presented in several international film festivals through which Siddiqui got an appreciation for his performance. He was then cast as a police officer in the Sujoy Ghosh-directed film Kahaani, which earned him nationwide recognition and a National Award for his performance, making him more popular among critics and the public than film festivals. Then came his big success as an actor in Gangs of Wasseypur directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film took them places and the film itself gained a cult status.

After Kahaani he also received a National Award for his performance in the film. He then appeared as a male lead in the Ashim Ahluwalia-directed film Miss Lovely which, as anticipated, was presented at several film festivals including the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. He strongly believes that this is his best performance to date. Then, he starred in the sequel Gangs of Wasseypur directed by Anurag Kashyap. He played the lead role in the horror picture, Aatma(2013), which received mixed reviews; He played the ghost of a dead man in the flick.

It was a commercial film that did average at the box office. He was then cast in The Lunchbox in 2013 which was presented at several international film festivals and was honored with several international awards. He once again played a role opposite Irrfan Khan after the award-winning short film, Bypass. He also appeared in Search for Aamir Khan and received a National Award for his performance. Then, in 2014 he starred as the main antagonist in Salman Khan’s starrer Kick. The film was Siddiqui’s first high-budget masala commercial film and proved to be a blockbuster at the box office.

In 2015, Siddiqui starred in Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan. He played a comic role in the film. The film became Salman Khan’s highest-grossing film collecting around 900 crores worldwide and hence Siddiqui got more recognition and praise. In the same year, he starred in Manjhi: The Mountain Man. Nawazuddin’s films released in 2015 were well received by the public.

In 2016 came his next collaboration work with Anurag Kashyap, Raman Raghav 2.0 in which he starred alongside Vicky Kaushal. He played the role of a real-life psycho killer, Raman Raghav. The film was played at several film festivals and Siddiqui received several awards for his performance.

In 2017, he starred in several commercial films including Raees, Mom, and Munna Michael which were major big films of which he was a part. He starred in Manto in 2018, which increased his stardom. He gave an extraordinary performance in the film which fetched him several awards. In the same year, he ventured into the world of OTT by starring in Sacred Games (2018-2019) starring opposite Saif Ali Khan. It is considered one of the best shows produced by Netflix India.

In 2019, he acted in several films. He acted in the Tamil film Petta as the antagonist of Superstar Rajinikanth, hence he ventured into the South industry. He also played the role of leader of Shiv Sena’s political party Balasaheb Thackeray in the film Thackeray.

In 2020, he acted in 3 films, all three OTT released. He acted in one Zee5 movie and two Netflix movies. He is currently working in an English flick titled No Land’s Man and another big-budget film titled Heropanti 2 starring Tiger Shroff.

Siddique At National Award Ceremony

He received an Asian Film Award for his performance in Talaash. He received the New York Indian Film Festival Award for his performance in Dekh Indian Circus. In 2013, she received two awards including a Filmfare Award for her performance in the film The Lunch Box. In 2015, being his box office hit year, he received 2 ZeeCine Awards for Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Badlapur and a Filmfare Award for Badlapur.

He received an award from the IBNlive Awards for his performance in the film Manjhi – The Mountain Man. In 2018, he received 5 awards, including the Filmfare Award, IIFA Award, and GQ Men of the Year Award for his performance in the movie MOM. He also received the Asia Pacific Screen Awards for Manto and the Iris Award for his debut Netflix series Sacred Games. In 2019, he received the Filmfare Award for his performance in the film Manto.

He received two awards including a Filmfare Award for his performance in the film Photograph and a Filmfare OTT Award for his OOT release Raat Akeli Hai. In the first half of 2021, he received the IWMBuzz Digital Award Season 3 for his performance in the film Raat Akeli Hai.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui or nickname Nawaz is 5’6 tall with dark brown eyes and black hair. Taurus is the zodiac sign of Novaz and is an Indian (Nationality) by birth. Apart from farming, his hobby is flying kites and watching movies. He dated actress Niharika Singh at one point in his life.

Nawazuddin lives in his apartment in Mumbai with his younger brother, who is a film producer in the cinema industry. He has a son Yani (born on Nawazuddin’s 41st birthday) and daughter Shora with his now ex-wife Anjana Kishore Pandey. The couple announced their divorce in 2020. 

Siddiqui is very fond of farming. He does farming in his hometown, Budhana (Uttar Pradesh), when he is independent and has taken it up as a full-time hobby when the lockdown was announced due to panic. He once revealed that his goal is to make people aware of new techniques in farming. They have started work from their own town, and have educated them with new techniques of irrigation.

Controversy

His ex-girlfriends filed a case against Siddiqui for giving false information about their relationship in his biography “An Ordinary Life”, for which he himself apologized on Twitter, and after the complaint, he made to the National Commission for Women, his biography was withdrawn.
